Former Chair of the School of Cinematic Arts Slavko Vorkapich was born in Serbia in 1894 and moved to the United States in 1920. He not only was the chair at USC, but was one of the most well-known innovators of montage in Hollywood. At the USC Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive, we have been digitizing his collection which includes his lectures given at USC, his personal home movies, innovative films, and still photography. His papers and additional snapshots are available at the Cinema Arts Library on USC Campus.

We would also like to honor the memory of Anne Friedberg, who served as Chair of the Critical Studies Department of USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and who was writing “Montage in Hollywood: The Cinematics of Slavko Vorkapic” when she passed away in October 2009.
